Step Up to the Plate and Support Pediatric Cancer Research
Following approval by the Alabama Department of Motor Vehicles, the Curing Childhood Cancer license plate is currently available for pre-purchase. Proceeds from sales of the tag will benefit pediatric cancer research efforts at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Children’s Hospital.
Individuals who are interested should visit their county probate office and complete a Commitment to Purchase form. A requirement of 1,000 commitments is necessary before this specialty license plate can be put into circulation. Of the $50 payment, $41.25 will go directly to these research efforts.
Other than accidents, cancer is the leading cause of death among children. Every year, 12,000 children are diagnosed with some form of cancer and unfortunately, 35 percent do not survive.
“We thought a specialty tag would be a good way for the citizens of Alabama to contribute directly to the curing of the childhood cancers,” says Drake Nunn, Director of Children’s Community Development Department.
The UAB Department of Hematology/Oncology at Children’s Hospital treats 95 percent of all pediatric cancer patients in Alabama, and offers advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques for cancer and hematological disease in children and adolescents younger than age 18.
